Capture Cornwall

Aspects of Health and Safety ;All the pictures I took were taken on a beach so great care was needed . As there was two of us on the shoots we had to firstly ensure that ourselve or any of our equipment did not create any hazards to each other as neither of us wanted to get wet!! Whilst on the beaches we had to take particular care to try to keep the sand out of our equipment to do this we used clear plastic bags to kepp them in while not in use. Care was needed whilst setting up tripods for two reasons , one so that the legs didn't foal ourselves or any others on the beach and that they were not positioned in such a place were we could get stranded by the incoming tide.
ISO 100 , 1/800 sec F10 , Beach WalkThis was taken at St Michaels Mount with the sun directly above me. I like how the eye is drawn from the foreground with sun light reflected on the sand  then up the picture to be then directed from the left and the right to the top center where a boat is. I used a fairly small aperture of f10 coupled with a fast shutter speed of 1/800th sec so as not over expose the picture. This worked quite well and I am pleased with the result.
Here I have attempted to emulate the feel of a Joe Cornish image , by giving the feeling of being actually standing at the scene with the image focus from the standing point through to the middle ground and back ground. I think this picture is a reasenable attempt apart from the sky but does show a good balance of colours and gives the viewer plenty of areas to view.
Here we see a Joe Cornish image , this shows great clarity and wonderfull colour tones. The focus kept through out his image shown is wondrous with the blocks of colour really well balanced.

The image below was taken with the intention of showing a lot of movement in the image. I used the orange filter just at the very top and waited for the waves to crash against the rocks to take the picture. By doing this I was able to give a really warm feeling to the top that gives a really good contrast to that of the foreground. Using a slower shutter speed and timing the shot gave the shot a real feeling of excitement with the water rushing in towards you.

F16 , 1/4 sec , ISO 200,  18mm with gradient filter. This image was taken by using a small aperture coupled with a slow shutter speed . The shapes show to me both a feeling of static objects ,the rocks in the foreground and the flowing movement of the sea in the background down to the foaming water in the foreground.
Here I will be showing photographs I have taken during a chance visit to Porthleven in Cornwall. I was asked by my sister in-law to help her move to Cornwall so jumped at the chance as thought straight away I may be able to take some pictures for my blog. I took my Nikon D3100 its standard lens a tripod I bought from Jessops and a few colour gradiant filters borrowed from a friend. The first pictures I took were taken on the first evening and were perhaps a little rushed. I set all the parameters myself to try and achieve as best a shot as I could.

F/16 , 1/6th sec , ISO 200 , 18mm with gradient filter.
Shutter speed 1/13sec , f16 , ISO200 Focal length 18mm

The picture below was taken controlling all the parameters manually, except from the focus which was set to auto and the Image stabilising switched on .  I set the F stop to 16 , used ISO 200 , shutter speed set 1/6sec and a 18mm focal length. By doing all this I was able show the movement of the water by slowing the shutter speed and was able to keep the foreground and back ground in focus by using the a small aperture of F16 .

  1. Hi
A range of really strong images that show how you are controlling your camera with details of settings, etc...
Also I need to look through all images with you so we can discuss which best to select for your theme.
Great work and commitment to travel and take these images.

  2. Really great captures Ian and I like the use of the filter. I think my favorite is of the walkway with the castle in silhouette.
