Assignment 208 Theme 2 Statement of Intent

Candidate name : Ian Emmerson
Theme: Nature
Title of theme
Intentions / purpose of the photography to be undertaken
To capture images of landscapes and natural settings . In doing this I hope to portray as best a image I can to represent a style I wish to find within my self. I will be attempting to take some Marco photographs as well as in normal. I am lucky to have a fairly large garden so will be looking to take images over the next few to weeks to show the different states of how the garden changes with the looking to take pictures from my garden and the local area. I recently visited Cornwall and was fortunate in that the weather was very kind to us. We were able to take some pictures a Lizard point and Lands End.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)
I'm at my happiest when I'm outside amongst nature. This I believe has come about from my childhood , as we were always taken on caravan holidays to North Wales and lived with fields to the back of our house where me and my brothers would play for hours on end. So I see the outdoors as a part of how I grew up and feel very at ease with it. I have always loved walking and climbing mountains so have been able to see many great scenes which have inspired me to take pictures of them. When I left school back in 1985 I went to Burton College to further my education and took 'O' level Photography , which I passed. I obviously learnt the basics of camera operations and of the famous photographers throughout history. For me and I'm sure for many other it was Ansell Adams who really made me think about just how did he manage to create such amazing images. I remembered learning about his f64 club he was a member of where they could only take pictures using that f stop.
I really like the work of Tony Marsh. He is a self taught photographer how after many years of dedicated work has become one the nations best known photographers of landscape. His image of Castle Rigg, a stone circle from 3200BC in the Lake District shown at the start, shows to me as real sense of understanding of how to portray a image of peace and beauty.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why
Nikon D3100 , AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm VR lens,Filters and Tripod .In a digital format as will be able to view pictures as taken and then make adjustments if required and re take shot .Also to enable more control as will be able to edit within Photoshop.
Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message
I will be using the manual setting on my camera to enable me to control the shutter speed and the aperture of the lens. By doing this I can control the depth of field portrayed in my pictures. For instance if i chose a small aperture say f8 this will help keep the foreground and back ground in a picture in focus but will need to use a slower shutter speed to keep the correct exposure. If I choose a large aperture setting say for taking pictures of flower which you wish to keep as the main focus of the picture you then get the background out of focus.  Also I will attempt to control the ISO setting but up to now I have had not too much success so leaving it the the camera's brains to work out for me at the moment.
How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message
The light effects photography greatly , depending on the time of day you shoot. Early in the morning you  can get a clear light which has less
