Chris Marsh Images

A major part of this assignment states we are to research photographers who we feel may influence our work . During my search I came across Chris Marsh , who has his own blog to show case his work. His work is for his own pleasure as he is a hobby photographer.I enjoy his pictures as they , up to now, show scenes in their natuarl positions. His approach is relaxed in that he seems to take shots when it suit him so not rushed.
His blog gives clear and easy advise to follow, which I've found very helpful.I particularly like his shot of the tree taken in Cannock Chase

Capture Cornwall

Aspects of Health and Safety ;All the pictures I took were taken on a beach so great care was needed . As there was two of us on the shoots we had to firstly ensure that ourselve or any of our equipment did not create any hazards to each other as neither of us wanted to get wet!! Whilst on the beaches we had to take particular care to try to keep the sand out of our equipment to do this we used clear plastic bags to kepp them in while not in use. Care was needed whilst setting up tripods for two reasons , one so that the legs didn't foal ourselves or any others on the beach and that they were not positioned in such a place were we could get stranded by the incoming tide.

Assignment 208 Theme 2 Statement of Intent

Candidate name : Ian Emmerson
Theme: Nature
Title of theme
Intentions / purpose of the photography to be undertaken
To capture images of landscapes and natural settings . In doing this I hope to portray as best a image I can to represent a style I wish to find within my self. I will be attempting to take some Marco photographs as well as in normal. I am lucky to have a fairly large garden so will be looking to take images over the next few to weeks to show the different states of how the garden changes with the looking to take pictures from my garden and the local area. I recently visited Cornwall and was fortunate in that the weather was very kind to us. We were able to take some pictures a Lizard point and Lands End.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)
I'm at my happiest when I'm outside amongst nature. This I believe has come about from my childhood , as we were always taken on caravan holidays to North Wales and lived with fields to the back of our house where me and my brothers would play for hours on end. So I see the outdoors as a part of how I grew up and feel very at ease with it. I have always loved walking and climbing mountains so have been able to see many great scenes which have inspired me to take pictures of them. When I left school back in 1985 I went to Burton College to further my education and took 'O' level Photography , which I passed. I obviously learnt the basics of camera operations and of the famous photographers throughout history. For me and I'm sure for many other it was Ansell Adams who really made me think about just how did he manage to create such amazing images. I remembered learning about his f64 club he was a member of where they could only take pictures using that f stop.
I really like the work of Tony Marsh. He is a self taught photographer how after many years of dedicated work has become one the nations best known photographers of landscape. His image of Castle Rigg, a stone circle from 3200BC in the Lake District shown at the start, shows to me as real sense of understanding of how to portray a image of peace and beauty.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why
Nikon D3100 , AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm VR lens,Filters and Tripod .In a digital format as will be able to view pictures as taken and then make adjustments if required and re take shot .Also to enable more control as will be able to edit within Photoshop.
Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message
I will be using the manual setting on my camera to enable me to control the shutter speed and the aperture of the lens. By doing this I can control the depth of field portrayed in my pictures. For instance if i chose a small aperture say f8 this will help keep the foreground and back ground in a picture in focus but will need to use a slower shutter speed to keep the correct exposure. If I choose a large aperture setting say for taking pictures of flower which you wish to keep as the main focus of the picture you then get the background out of focus.  Also I will attempt to control the ISO setting but up to now I have had not too much success so leaving it the the camera's brains to work out for me at the moment.
How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message
The light effects photography greatly , depending on the time of day you shoot. Early in the morning you  can get a clear light which has less
Safety considerations

Assingment 208 Statement of Intent

Candidate name : Ian Emmerson
Theme: People and portraits

Title of theme
Childlife

Intentions / purpose of the photography to be undertaken
I will be looking to capture images of my children and their friends in daily life, from their school life through to their home life. The images will show different aspects of their lives from school time through to play time.I will be hoping to capture images showing a relaxed feeling to them in a candid style. Candid photography is so called because the pictures are taken in a un posed and unplanned manner. So your subjects will feel more relaxed as not having to be given direction from you this is especially good for children , who a the best of times can't stand in one place for long.
During research I came across Tina Barney an American photographer with a candid style. She is best known for her shot of her family and friends in the 80's and 90's. Her images give of a relaxed feeling between the subjects and her. These images below show a real understanding of the humanistic life. I like very much them as there seems to be very little preperation as they look so natural but after studying you realise that these to me have been taken with great care and a lot of preperation . This can be seen by the way she has staged the scene by example she not only has the cupboards open but they are lit and I think there is a window open as there is a feeling of movement from the beds drape to the right of the shot.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)
Due to my lifestyle and time restraints I will be looking to photograph my children and their friends as they enjoy their lives together. It really interests me how a picture, although only taking a fraction of a second to create , can show and tell us so much about a person and their way of life.

Images local to me...

These are a few pictures I have taken over the spring , summer and autumn this year. These were taken with a Nikon D3100 and an old Nikon Coolpix 8700 I have owned for about five years. I enjoy taking pictures of natural locations, not staged but from different angles. The picture 3rd from bottom was taken in late September early one Saturday morning at around 6am as you can see just as the sun had began to rise. The location is near to Tatenhill Common looking towards Burton on Trent, I'd cycled past this spot many many times going to work so had wanted to capture this image for a long time. I set my camera up a
